Here are some very brief breastfeeding facts. Some of these are discuss in extensive detail under the FAQ section (see menu at left).
But here are the basics:
1) The vast majority of women can provide all the nourishment and hydration their babies need, until about the middle of the first year of life. NO supplements are necessary if the breastfeeding is going well (except for Vitamin D in some cases). Most women can make enough milk to feed twins or triplets.
2) Breastfeeding should feel basically okay right from the first feeding. It is not normal for it to hurt. If it hurts, you probably need to reposition the baby's mouth. You will probably need help to learn this.
3) Breastfeeding can continue for as long as both mother and child want. There is no need to wean to a bottle. The World Health Organization recommends that mothers breastfeed exclusively until about six months, and then continue breastfeeding for up to two years or longer while adding complementary foods.
4) Breastfeeding is compatible with most medications, including methadone, painkillers, anti-depressants, and many other drugs, even tobacco, and does not have to be interrupted. It is not compatible with street drugs. Dr. Thomas Hale and Dr. Jack Newman are good authorities on drugs and breastfeeding.
5) You do not have to alter your diet in most cases when you are breastfeeding. If you usually like to eat spicy foods, for example, that should be fine. And you do not have to "drink milk to make milk". It is a good idea to have a good basic diet, and to drink adequate liquids so you will have enough energy to take care of your baby.
